A Brilliant Open Letter – #TWIN63

Theresa Wells, a blogger/writer, mother, wife – and passionate advocate for Fort McMurray/Wood Buffalo, put up a great post yesterday regarding the latest in a series of tragic incidents on Highway 63. Here is a small excerpt from “An Open Letter to Premier Alison Redford – Fort McMurray and Highway 63“:

Today, Friday, April 27th, another horrific accident occurred on the 63, and I am quite certain you heard about it. Six dead at the scene, and three transported to hospital by air ambulance. One died shortly after. As I write this two others continue to fight for their lives. Perhaps you saw the same photo I did on Twitter, Premier, of a vehicle in flames. I had been on the verge of tears since hearing about the accident but the photo caused me to weep. And I wept even more upon learning that when that photo was taken one of the victims was still inside the inferno that had once been a vehicle.

Please read the entire letter.

The fact that this is still an issue in our region is hurting our community deeply. These head-on tragedies are 100% preventable. And the Alberta Government has stood by and watch this happen. Continue reading “A Brilliant Open Letter – #TWIN63″ »

“I don’t want to vote for any of them…”

I don’t want to vote for any of them, but I still want to vote. I don’t know what to do.

Familiar Quote

I’m hearing a lot of apathy and frustration amongst locals regarding the looming Alberta Provincial Election. It mostly revolves around a lack of satisfaction with the candidates running or the parties they are running for. It also doesn’t seem to matter if it’s the Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo or the Fort McMurray-Conklin constituency, residents seem dissatisfied and just don’t know who to vote for. And you can include me in that group.

This is a problem. But there is a solution. Continue reading ““I don’t want to vote for any of them…”” »

A little project called TEDxFortMcMurray has recently taken over my life, which has caused many of my online feeds to dry up and become like long-lost friends… but this is to let you know I’ll be coming back soon.

Combatting Traffic in Fort McMurray

Points go to Ken Chapman who sent me to a recent post on the Oil Sands Question And Response (OSQAR via Suncor) entitled “How to keep things rolling in Fort McMurray”. Here’s an excerpt:

Do you cringe when you think about your daily commute to and from work? Ever secretly wished all the roads were just for you? You’re not alone. For many of us, bumper-to-bumper commutes are a painful reality of our work week. Believe it or not, if you don’t live in Alberta’s Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), your rush hour commute might seem like a Sunday pleasure cruise compared to what this community endures most days.

What does a microphone taste like? Leadership Wood Buffalo knows!

Last week, a crop of regional enthusiasts (also know as the Leadership Wood Buffalo Cohort of 2011/2012) got up-close and personal with members of the media – so much so that a microphone came very close to being a pre-lunch appetizer!

Media maven and municipal councillor Russell Thomas gave the group a very interesting lesson in “Managing the Message” while being interviewed by the media.

Russell led us through the basics with his sidekick, Rock 97.9 radio personality Nolan Haukeness, then split us into groups, gave us all cases to announce/defend/play-hot-potato and pulled inspiration from a classic when he let slip his dogs of war: Morgan Modjeski of the Fort McMurray Today, the aforementioned Nolan Haukeness of Rock 97.9 and the deadly combination of Bianca Jade and Chandra Rempel of Shaw TV Fort McMurray. X Marks the Spot: TEDx is coming to Fort McMurray

TEDxFortMcMurray_Logo_WhiteI am fortunate enough to have been enrolled in the current Leadership Wood Buffalo cohort for 2011-2012. An argument could be made that perhaps LWB’s vetting process needs to be adjusted, or perhaps one could argue the other side, that LWB made an awesometastic decision.

But the jury will be out until history can be the judge. And do you know what history will be judging? History is going to be judging a TEDx event in our community! Talk about advantage me!

Two Big Ideas – Traffic In Fort McMurray

Portland Tram

A while back the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo was asking residents to chime in, to enter into the collaborative spirit of things to help improve our community, to make it a healthier and happier place. And so of course I chimed in, both in person at the Mac Island launch and via the Big Idea website (bigideawoodbuffalo.ca).

Crazy Idea No. 1 – Aerial Tram from Thickwood to Mac Island

My Crazy/Big Idea that I entered into the RMWB website came from a recent trip to the States. Mrs. MOS and I went on a bit of a road trip this past summer, and our furthest destination was the city of Portland.

We spent just less than a week kicking around and taking Portland in, and one of the extremely geeky things we wanted to do was ride the Portland Aerial Tram that runs from the South Waterfront to the OHSU Center for Health & Healing. And ride it we did. And awesome it was.

A few quick facts (taken from the website):

  • It’s part of the public transit system
  • Costs $4, roundtrip
  • Takes 3 mins to travel 1 Km
  • And being Swiss-designed is A-OK in winter as it’s “very capable and trustworthy in the extreme winter conditions of the Swiss Alps”

But back to the idea part: Better connect the “northern communities” of Fort McMurray to what is fast becoming the heart of our city – Mac Island. Skip Highway 63, skip the congestion of Thickwood or Confed, skip that accident on the bridge… just grab your over-due library books or hockey bag and jump on the tram. Three to five minutes later, BAM! Enjoy Mac Island and jump back on for the ride home. Combine the tram with the steadily improving transit system and you might just have yourself a winner here.
