My Oil Sands is Dead. Long Live My Oil Sands!

The New myoilsands

the new mos

Well, most of the behind-the-scenes stuff has been accomplished, so I feel confident in opening the floodgates on myoilsands.ca – the new home of my oil sands. The old myoilsands.wordpress.com is still available for viewing, but it will no longer be updated or allow comments to be posted.

While a few things here and there need to be ironed out, and the look and feel of the site is a bit different than the old one, things should be pretty much the same. You’ll still find Fort McMurray, RMWB, or oil sands info here at MOS.

Small things may change over the next few days and weeks, but for the most part, this is home. It feels right, a dot ca at the end of myoilsands, don’t you think?

Comments… Meet Disqus

Disqus CommentsWhile all comments from the old blog have been rolled over to the new system (still a WordPress operation for the blog geeks out there), there is a new and extremely easy comment system now handling things: Disqus.

While you do not have to log in or be a member of Disqus to post here, it will save you time and effort to become a Disqus member if you constantly comment or otherwise add value to websites and blogs – it’s a great, free service and will save you time in the long run.

Yes, Those Are Google Ads

Google AdSense logoGoogle Ads are a new addition to the site – though I am trying my best to keep them a) relevant, b) Safe For Work, and c) unobtrusive. This is a first for me as I have never before had the chance to use Google AdSense, so it will be interesting to see how it goes for all parties (Google, yourself the reader, and moi the “writer”).

Blogroll

The Blogroll has finally been implemented, and you can find it just there, over on the right hand side of the blog. Within the Blogroll, you will find other blogs or sites that I either read and contribute to, or find value in. Take a look at what these folks have to say, and don’t be afraid to post a comment as well.

So please poke around, read a post or two, comment below and come back often. The Athabasca Oil Sands are in the news, and as a result, so too are we as a community – shouldn’t residents of Fort McMurray and the RMWB be a part of that message?

Like the new look. I know these things don’t come together overnight, so Kudos to you for putting in the effort. Will spend some time over the next few days looking around.

Thanks a lot Jeremy – while I’ve taken a good look myself, please let me know if you see anything that’s obviously broken. Cheers, Matt

I’m with Jeremy! Nicely done. Nice to see the tools are so accessible and out there to create this (and I’m sure it’s taken a good chunk of your time to build it up). #YYC’s Nenshi has certainly shown the value of Social Media tools. It’s a wake-up call that SM isn’t a toy. (Now, about that time thing… Where can I get some?)

Thanks a lot Tony – I appreciate it. The Nenshi victory is a positive example for Canadians who were still wary or unsure about the ability of social media to channel or harness the power of people.

And you’re right about the time thing – social media is a time siiiiiiiiiink. I’m also looking around for some extra time – I’ve checked under the couch cushions and came up with enough change for a double-double, but no extra time to be found…
